The Importance of Reading Food Labels

I was so excited this morning to see “NEW Almond Butter Cups” by Sunspire at my local health food store. I used to love Reese’s peanut butter cups but do my best to stay away from them now that I eat healthier than I did back in high school and college…and in my 20s and early 30s. First and foremost, because of the sugar and processed ingredients, but also because I don’t eat peanut butter anymore. I’m not allergic, but peanuts tend to grow mold, so I prefer almond, cashew or walnut butters. They are delicious!!

Back to the candy…the almond butter cups caught my eye because I thought, “Yippee, I can try these; no peanuts!” Until I read the ingredients label and the allergy statement: Contains almonds, peanuts… I read further and saw that the candy had peanut flour in it along with almond butter.

I don’t fault Sunspire and they do make some products that I enjoy. The product was Almond Butter Cups and they were clear about what was in the candy. It just made me realize, once again, how easy it is to get confused by marketing and why it is so important to read the ingredients label before buying food. The candy was labeled Almond Butter Cups and the words “Made with Almond Butter” were underneath. I assumed that meant it was a product which was OK for individuals who don’t consume peanut and peanut products. I’m glad I read the label.
