It’s been a great Independence Day. An afternoon barbecue and evening concert at Tanglewood. Usually we see James Taylor but tonight was Jackson Browne. A good time was had by all.
One of my 11-year-old nephews recently wrote this poem. He won a contest and I’m so proud of him. I was so taken by his intelligence and creativity that I wanted to share the poem with you.
My Perfect Nation
I live in a wonderful land
Of diverse thoughts and beliefs.
Here live people from all over the world
With new cultures and religions to teach.
A man from France, A woman from Spain
And even one from China too.
Each here to tell and share
Their stories with me and you.
They come here for many reasons,
For freedom, religion, and peace.
They come and settle down here
And for generations their traditions do not cease.
Although at first when they arrive
Things do seem very strange.
They over time accustom
Learn to adapt and change.
Then they meet each other
Immigrants from across the sea.
And soon they start to learn
How their cultures can agree.
That is when the magic starts
That makes our nation the best.
They teach everyone an important lesson
That it’s okay to be different than the rest.
When they learn from each other
The puzzle pieces start to fit.
Through bringing their cultures across the world
A path for my perfect nation they have lit.
This is such a great post! He did an excellent job with this poem and you posted it on the perfect day.
And he’s ELEVEN? Wow, Jodi … I’m proud right along with you! I saw this post float past last night, and I was in a rush to get to my “two above me” and didn’t open it till tonight. SO glad I got here! Thanks for sharing!
Nephew of Jodi, I am so proud of you for writing this from your heart. When you create from your heart and try as hard as you can to see love, even in bad situations, you can achieve anything upon which you set your desire. Good job!!!!!
