Create your Opportunities…each and every day

Happy New Year! On one hand, I believe that every day, every moment really, is a chance to begin anew; an opportunity to start fresh. On the other hand, there is something magical about New Year’s Day. It screams: NEW BEGINNING. And that’s how I looked at this day. “Here it is,” I smiled, as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve. Amid the hugs and kisses and wishing everyone well, inside I was reviewing the goals I’ve set for 2013 and the dreams I have for this year. I am really excited.

I went to bed about 1″00 am and woke up at 6:15. I needed some water. My sister, who is spending time with us over the holidays, was also awake. We laughed at being up because we really were tired, so we went back to bed. The next thing I knew, my sister was on the treadmill. Now that’s a way to start the new year. I, however, procrastinated. I could’ve gone on when she was finished, but I told myself I didn’t have the energy. Then, we talked about going out for a little bit and I announced I would go on the treadmill when we got home. I was serious about that, but I did feel like I was letting myself down a bit. Part of me wanted to “just get it over with” and spend 30 minutes on the treadmill. The truth is, though, that physical activity is really important to me. I know that the time I spend exercising and stretching my body is an investment in my health and well-being. So, really, I don’t want to view my time on the treadmill as something “just to get over.”

We did go out for a little while (yes, shopping with my sister is a favorite pastime!) and when we got home we sat and knitted. All the while I was thinking, “It’s an opportunity to begin anew. When do you want to make the investment?” I made the decision to get on the treadmill at 4:30pm. I felt as if I were getting a deposit ready for the bank – an investment, indeed.

As I began to walk and increase the speed, I reminded myself that opportunities are all around. Every minute of every day there are decisions to make so that we can create the reality we envision for ourselves, our families, our careers and businesses. I’m grateful for the “procrastination moment” I had today because I’m using it as a lesson to remind me that every decision I make and every action I take creates my reality.

What reality are you creating? How does your book called Opportunity begin in 2013?
