My (food) Travel Essentials

I have to travel with food. I can’t leave it to chance that I will find something to eat at an airport. Times are certainly changing and there are more healthy options available now than in the past, but finding gluten-free, vegan food can be challenging (other than a salad with iceberg lettuce).

Whether I have a short flight (2.5 hrs to Florida) or a longer flight (5.5 hrs to California), I like to have quinoa with me. It is so easy to make and it travels so well. It can be out of the refrigerator for hours and won’t go bad. That is, I make it with vegetables, beans and some spices, but no dressing or sauce. It is so tasty and satisfying. Most of the time I bring enough so that I can eat some on the plane and then have another meal at my destination either later that day or the next day.

I also like to travel with snacks that I can carry in my bag to eat on the plane as well as pack in my suitcase, depending on how many days I will be away. The photo below shows my staples: nut butter and healthy bars. I really like the Artisana brand of nut butters because they don’t add any oils or sugar. I’ll also pack some rice cakes and this makes a perfect snack with a cup of tea and/or a great alternative to bread at a meal. If a banana is available, I’ll cut some slices to go on top of the nut butter for some sweetness.

The WildBar brand is a nice raw bar. It is dense, satisfying and vegan/gluten-free. In a pinch, these can serve as a meal replacement. Larabars are great to have for snacking, though now some are manufactured with added sugar so it is important to read the labels. I prefer the chocolate coconut chew and apple pie flavors. These are not meal replacements as they are not as filling, but can make a good, healthy sweet snack. I like to enjoy one with a cup of tea.

I also travel with fixings for trail mix: almonds, walnuts, goji berries, incan berries and mulberries. Sometimes I will bring raw cacao nibs for a treat ;).

Have you ever been caught with nothing too eat while traveling  (flight delay/cancelled)? Do you have favorite travel foods?
